West Branch Of The Penobscot Fishing Report. Exciting Dry Fly Action Arrives At Big Eddy

West Branch Penobscot

Landlocked Salmon at Big Eddy

May 27th

Water Temp:  54 degrees

The Important Stuff:  Early in the day there were sporadic Blue Wing Olives on the water, but the fish didn’t appear to pay any attention to them.  We started with a big black stonefly nymph and caught a few nice fish.  We landed brooktrout 13” and 16”, a sucker (don’t laugh, it was fun), and an 18” male salmon.

In the afternoon I started to see some light hendricksons and was able to catch a few fish on a dry fly.  First surface fish of the season, dry fly season has arrived!

In the evening the pace didn’t pick up, but with some patience and a drag free drift, fish could be taken on light colored mayfly patterns like a light hendrickson and even a white wulff.

Ponds:  The trout ponds in the Katahdin Region are producing a lot of fish, and some really nice fish.  It’s well worth the effort to plan a day in Baxter State Park, Nesowadnehunk Lake or any of the area’s heritage trout ponds.  Just be prepared to hike with a float tube or find an available boat.

Please be considerate of boats stashed around trout ponds.  People worked hard to get them there.  If they are chained up, please leave them alone.  If they are not chained up, it’s best to have permission.  If you can’t, or won’t do that, at least return the boat to the same location, and make sure it’s turned over so it doesn’t fill with rain water.

The Golden Road:  Early in the season it’s still pretty good.  There hasn’t been much rain or traffic yet to tear it up.  Take your time and your tires will thank you.
