Why I love fishing...
North west of Millinocket, a little more than 28 miles out the Golden Road, hugging the Western Boundary of Baxter State Park, you will find the West Branch of the Penobscot River at Chewonki’s Big Eddy Campground, and my home at site #10. We live here, because we love it.
No other reason. We just love it.
Hi, I’m Todd, founder of Horizonline Adventures. I grew up, following my father around these woods and waters. I remember when I was 8 years old, catching my first Salmon off the ledge above Roll Dam Campground near Seboomook Dam. These woods and waters are not just a place but are deeply woven into the fabric of who I am. I don’t feel more at home anywhere else.
We believe this place is here for everyone to enjoy, and we want you to love it as much as we do. We believe the more of this place you experience, the more you will love it.
You have to sit in an Adirondack chair on the shores of Big Eddy and watch the water float by. Across the river, just inside the left seam, you will probably see fishing rising.
You can sit in that same chair after dark and watch the stars spin around the Milky Way and maybe the Northern Lights will streak across the sky. We have some of the darkest skies (no light pollution) east of the Mississippi.
You have to feel the power of a Landlocked Salmon pulling the line off your reel as it dances on the water with your fly in the corner of its mouth.
I know there are plenty of guides out there...there is a list of them on the Big Eddy website. They all have to drive from Bangor, Madison, or Kokadjo, from somewhere else to get here. Because we live here, there are some things we can do that other guides just can’t.
- We don’t believe in secrets on the river. If you want to chat we are happy to give you hints about where to fish and what to fish with. Whether you are fishing with us or not, we want your visit to the West Branch of the Penobscot to be special.
- Tired of catching the trees behind you? We can rent you a drift boat to help you get off the shore to the seams and currents that hold consistently larger fish.
- Interested in Fly Fishing but don’t have any equipment? We’ve got you covered. Let us teach you the basics to get you started.
- Because we live here, we can offer evening trips. If you think Big Eddy looks crowded in the evening, then we can head downriver where the fish feel less pressure.
